Convolutions of an Evil Mind
Notice to my oh-so-patient COI readers... (it's not bad news, really!)
The good news: I'm back to writing.

The maybe-bad news: COI is being massively rewritten. And I mean MASSIVELY.

One of the main reasons that I stopped working on COI was because as result of my admittedly agonizingly slow writing speed, I've been quite thoroughly Jossed by the release of Advent Children Complete and Crisis Core.

So I faced a dilemma with three possible options.
(1) Do I plow on with COI as it was originally plotted, which was based only on the original game and ignore some very interesting plot points and characterizations from Advent Children and Crisis Core?
(2) Do I leave what was already written alone and try to fit in the interesting AC and CC aspects as I continue?
(3) Do I just bite the damn bullet and just do a massive rewrite?

Well, my decision is pretty clear from the beginning of this post. When I re-read the earlier chapters of COI, I occasionally ended up asking myself, "What the hell were you thinking?" and "Whoa, being a bit over-melodramatic there." You get the picture. So there's another benefit of a rewrite.

So I'm here to tell you guys that I'm now working on "Conflicts of Interest: Redux", which is set after Advent Children and incorporating material from Crisis Core. In some ways, it's much the same story as COI. But in others, it's very different beast indeed.

To be honest, I'm still working out some of the changes in my head, but the main ones are this:
(1) Cloud's character is more like his Advent Children depiction (i.e., quieter, more pensive). He's definitely not emo. I don't do emo.
(2) Tifa's character is also much more like her AC depiction, in that she's much nicer and more perceptive.
(3) Zack's going by his canonic last name (i.e., Zack Fair).
(4) Rufus and the Turks have an even bigger role in the story.
(5) I'm removing some unnecessary side plots, in hopes of producing a leaner, meaner story.
(6) I'm incorporating some information from the FF7 webnovels and other sources.

I don't know if you guys like this version or not, but I'll be honest -- I don't think I can continue to work on COI as it is. Aside from all the information from the new games, I can't help feeling that there are things about COI that HAVE to be fixed.

Don't worry. The existing chapters of COI will always be around, if that's the version you prefer.

The rough draft of first chapter of COI Redux should be ready in the next few days.

Okay, tell me what you think.

I will be perfectly honest. When you said that you are going to redux COI, I felt a chill of horror. The original COI is basically what made me get into writing (so no pressure, hahaha :P) and I dearly love how everyone is written. Even with Tifa being overprotective and somewhat bitchy, because we don't see that in fanfic a lot. Your original character interpretations for COI just seemed so real and organic to me. To be even more honest (and silly) I was just about to send you an email asking if I could do a digital visualization of COI in hopes of inspiring you to get back on it :) I'm actually working on another FFVII fanfic visualization Sunshine in Winter, don't know if you've heard of it.

However, you have a great talent for really being able to immerse people in your writing, so as long as it doesn't turn into a yaoi orgyfest I can deal with whatever you do. The original COI will still be near and dear to my heart, but I am now looking forward to the redux.

Unfortunately, I've been avoiding FF7 fanfics during the last few years, so I'm way behind in the fandom. Mainly that was because of my inability to decide how I wanted to deal with COI, in the face of my own changing style as a writer and all the new FFVII canon put out by Square-Enix.

I understand your reservations about a redux of COI. It's a drastic and there will some very major changes. But I hope that you'll find the Redux as enjoyable as the original. If not, you can always ignore it.

And as a digital visualization, if you think COI or its Redux is worthy of your time and energy, go for it! ^_^

Whatever you want to do, I'll lap it up. I've been reading your stuff since you were writing GW and Ranma. I've always enjoyed it.
But I know what you mean when you step away from something for awhile, read what you wrote and go "I wrote this shit?!?! I'm so ashamed! I can do better" Writers are always evolving and getting better. So looking forward to what you crank out.

Thanks for understanding this writer's artistic whims! I really think that the plot of COI is solid. However, looking back at it after all these years, I felt that the implementation needed some serious work. I hope you like the new version!

Welcome back! So glad you are writing again! As encouragement: if you feel more comfortable with a rewrite, definitely go for it! :)
On a side note: I started haunting your website again day before yesterday - coincidence or fate? ;)

Who knows? ::eerie Twilight Zone theme::

Anyway, thanks for the support. The first chapter of Redux has been posted. Hope you enjoy it!

welcome, welcome, welcome back!

I'm so glad that you've decided to return to the fandom!

The work that awaits you is frighteningly huge, so good luck with it and be sure that there are people who will definitely approve of anything you do, because COI is the fic that attracted many of them to the fandom :)

Re: welcome, welcome, welcome back!

Thanks! Yes, a rewrite for a fic epic of this size is a big commitment -- the main chapters (not counting side stories) is over 100,000 words long. But I feel that the basic plot of COI can still work, even taking AC and the other parts of the new FFVII canon into account.

Who knows, that plot might even become more interesting. Hope you enjoy the Redux!

I'm all for it, only b/c I think by now, the guys over at Squeenix are done tweaking the FF7 universe for a little while so you would be in the clear to start your massive rewrite of COI.

Good luck with it and I am looking forward to reading it from the beginning. ^_^
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: May 4th, 2010 01:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, I'm going to have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that Square-Enix doesn't come out with something else that will totally screw with the Redux.

As it stands, the original game and AC/Complete are the only things that are fully canonic for COI Redux. Before Crisis and Crisis Core will be semi-canonic. As for the other FFVII works, I'll be using only the parts that interest me. Don't even talk to me about Dirge of Cerberus. ::eyeroll::

So Glad to hear you are planing on continuing! A rewrite sounds wonderful and I'm looking forward to see what is incorped, obviously still here and waiting and glad to see you writing again!

Thanks for all your patience and I hope that you enjoy Redux. The first chapter's up and I hope that it's at least as good as the original!

This is great news

I've been waiting so long for you to keep writing COI, sheesh ;p Really. I believe there's nothing wrong with going with your original story and not incorporating Advent Children and Crisis Core. You created your own interpretation of FFVII and the world the characters inhabit. However, I'm just glad to see you writing COI again. Been a fan for soooooo long (I think I first read it in 2000 or so). Can't wait to read more!!!!

Re: This is great news

Thanks both for the support and patience. It's taken me a long time to decide on the drastic step of doing a complete rewrite.

True, there was nothing wrong with keeping COI an AU based solely on the original game. My main reason for the rewrite was the style of the original story. Over the years, my writing style has matured -- I hope! -- and I wanted to give the basic COI plot the presentation that I feel it deserves.
