Convolutions of an Evil Mind
Notice to my oh-so-patient COI readers... (it's not bad news, really!)
The good news: I'm back to writing.

The maybe-bad news: COI is being massively rewritten. And I mean MASSIVELY.

One of the main reasons that I stopped working on COI was because as result of my admittedly agonizingly slow writing speed, I've been quite thoroughly Jossed by the release of Advent Children Complete and Crisis Core.

So I faced a dilemma with three possible options.
(1) Do I plow on with COI as it was originally plotted, which was based only on the original game and ignore some very interesting plot points and characterizations from Advent Children and Crisis Core?
(2) Do I leave what was already written alone and try to fit in the interesting AC and CC aspects as I continue?
(3) Do I just bite the damn bullet and just do a massive rewrite?

Well, my decision is pretty clear from the beginning of this post. When I re-read the earlier chapters of COI, I occasionally ended up asking myself, "What the hell were you thinking?" and "Whoa, being a bit over-melodramatic there." You get the picture. So there's another benefit of a rewrite.

So I'm here to tell you guys that I'm now working on "Conflicts of Interest: Redux", which is set after Advent Children and incorporating material from Crisis Core. In some ways, it's much the same story as COI. But in others, it's very different beast indeed.

To be honest, I'm still working out some of the changes in my head, but the main ones are this:
(1) Cloud's character is more like his Advent Children depiction (i.e., quieter, more pensive). He's definitely not emo. I don't do emo.
(2) Tifa's character is also much more like her AC depiction, in that she's much nicer and more perceptive.
(3) Zack's going by his canonic last name (i.e., Zack Fair).
(4) Rufus and the Turks have an even bigger role in the story.
(5) I'm removing some unnecessary side plots, in hopes of producing a leaner, meaner story.
(6) I'm incorporating some information from the FF7 webnovels and other sources.

I don't know if you guys like this version or not, but I'll be honest -- I don't think I can continue to work on COI as it is. Aside from all the information from the new games, I can't help feeling that there are things about COI that HAVE to be fixed.

Don't worry. The existing chapters of COI will always be around, if that's the version you prefer.

The rough draft of first chapter of COI Redux should be ready in the next few days.

::donning flameproof suit and grabbing riot shield::

Okay, tell me what you think.

Everyone welcomes returners to writing, and I for one am glad that you're still at it!

A redux, wow. I'd be super-stoked to read it all again, new and improved. Although it has to be said (and I'm not trying to be uber-kiss-assey here so please forgive me) that COI is pretttty much my fanon. I remember when I first read it and then found out about AC due to come out and I thought "Damn, if it doesn't have the COI storyline it ... it just isn't going to work". It is so burnt into my mind in fact that it was just last week I quoted a highlight from VII, was picked up on it, and actually had to accept Um, sorry, that might have been from fanfiction.

So a rewrite is great news, and very brave of you, and I wish you entirely the best! This conclusion completely contradicts the big paragraph int he middle! But know that I mean it all, even if the points DO go against eachother.

And I totally owe you for getting me into Dissidia.

Thanks for the support! And while I know that a lot of people like COI, I hope that you'll enjoy becoming acquainted with the Redux version.

AC is a bit of a weird beast for me. Although it wasn't at all what I expected from a sequel, it made a sort of sense, too. And the sheer eyecandy factor cannot be denied. ^_-

Hmmmm, redux...redux... on one hand, it's not the original, but on the other hand, I have yet to read anything by you that's not good....hmmm... so torn.... Ah who am I kidding, welcome back to the fandom! I would rather have endless redo's and have you here then have it stuck in limbo with no additional writing anyday. (On a side note, any further interest in expanding the feralverse? Totally shipping Reeve, Red XIII and Yuffie, which I totally and completely blame on you, dang side notes.) But yay! more COI in any form is more then welcome, welcome back!

Thanks for the support!

At the moment, I'm going to be concentrating on getting COI Redux on its feet, but I'm certainly still interested in expanding Feralverse in the future. So hang in there!

*cough*mumble* I had forgotten I was following you until this post went up. Obviously I am still here for the COI! *mumblecough*

If you can do it, and feel (as your icon says) rejuvenated at the thought, go for it! I will quite happily read COI Redux (even if I prefer to throw AC canon out the window personally).

Also, what are these webnovels you speak of, hmm?
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: May 4th, 2010 12:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
It took me a while to warm up to the AC canon, too, but in the end, I found it wasn't so bad.

But to be honest, I started the Redux not because I was crazy about AC -- although it really started my love affair with Rufus and the Turks! -- but rather because there were things about my writing in COI that I found genuinely wince-worthy, especially the earliest chapters. ::shudder::

ETA: I've put a link to the FF7 webnovels in my post of the first chapter of Redux. They're not going to be canonic for COI Redux, but they provide some interesting plot points and background for the FF7 universe.

Ah, my Feralverse muses. They're still snoozing at the moment in there. ::points a heavily chained up closet:: And they're going STAY snoozing in there until I get COI Redux up and running.

After that, I'll let them out to play. ^_-

OMG, you're writing, again! *_* I can't tell you how much I love you right now. ^_^ I'd about given up hope. Just goes to show that one should always have faith. ^_~ Only now I definitely need to get off my butt and finish FF7... and Crisis Core... and watch AC. O_O Hmm... better get to work on that. ((COI was the one story you'd written that I hadn't read, so as not to spoil myself for the games. -.-;;; But if that's what you're working on, I will get my butt in gear and finish off said games so as to be ready! *fistpump*))

^_^ Thanks for this tidbit of wonderful news!

Thanks for the support. Yes, it's been a long, long time. Real Life(tm) distractions was part of the reason for the long delay, but the abundance of new FFVII material -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- also had a lot to do with it.

Crisis Core really is a good game and made me fall in love with Zack more... even though he did turn out to be more of an adorable dork than I imagined. ::fond sappy grin::

Despite all the complaints about Cloud suddenly turning emo, AC does make a lot of sense to me once I thought about for a while. At least it's not bordering on WTF terrority like ::cough:: Dirge of Cerberus ::cough::.

Woohoo!!! *runs in circles* I'm soo psyched!!

I just love your writing and your perspective on characters and the work you put in and share on your interpretation of the universe. Heck I'll admit it you are one of my favorite authors and part of the reason I found and enjoyed fanfiction to begin with. I've read stuff by you in fandoms I never read that is how much I like your writing. :P

On the subject of rewrites. I use to find them very irritating and annoying when I was younger, but now I must admit I can really see the advantage of them and in cases with long stories or writers who have really developed and grown and really like them. One because the redux in itself really benefits from the growth in plot and writing style. Two because I will admit I'm weak to AUs, turning things on their head and different PoVs. Third I think writing should be a joy and fun not something you feel you have to force yourself to do. I would much rather an author I really enjoy move on and write something that gives them happiness and joy then burn themselves out turning something they once enjoyed into a chore.

Finally I'm selfish and greedy. I'll take more of anything you have to give me. :P

That's awesome!

Strangely enough, I was thinking about COI just the other day and musing sadly that it'd probably never get finished. I don't think I've ever been quite so excited to be wrong! :D

Good luck with the rewrite! I know it will be fabulous. ♥

Thanks for the support!

Hopefully Square-Enix is done tickering with the FFVII canon is complete and I can finish this story before I get completely sideswiped by yet another game or movie. ::eyeroll::

I look forward to seeing it myself. I wouldn't know whether a rewrite is for better or worse 'till I see it, but I trust you as an author (I mean really, you're spectacular) I adore Zack and I think that's the main reason I liked COI so much in the first place.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: May 4th, 2010 12:43 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! I hope that I can meet your expectations and that you find Redux at least as satisfying as the original.

Spiffy! If you're still writing, I'm still reading! I'm still dying to see how this all turns out. :)
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: May 4th, 2010 12:45 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank you. Hopefully, this time I'm be able to get to the end of the damn story before Square-Enix comes out with something else that completely screws over my plotline. :P
