Of all the EXPLETIVE DELETED nerve!!!!
jessara40k very kindly notified me that someone apparently plagiarized my Final Fantasy VII fic "Conflicts of Interest".

This is the link to my fic, posted at FF.net since May 2000:

This is the plagiarized version recently posted in July 2008:
EDIT 1: Since the plagiarized version on FF.net has been deleted (as of 13-Jun-2008) -- thank you everyone who reported it! -- here's a PDF copy of the plagarized version:

Not only a plagiarist, but a fucking incompetent one at that! Couldn't even take the trouble to change the title, a word or two, or even format the stolen fic properly? Sheesh!

EDIT 2: Unfortunately, although the plagiarized copy of COI has been removed, the plagiarist is still on FF.net. You can find her 'author' profile here (it makes for some amusing reading!):

Current Mood: aggravated aggravated

Welcome to the club. Here's the commemoration ring and the secret handshake. *pats sympathetically*

Seriously, though, what the hell? Is it just me, or are all the idiots on the Internet getting even stupider lately? I've reported her, hope that gets her ass banned... she seems to have stolen most (if not all) of the fics on her author's page.

::memorizes secret handshake and carefully adds ring to her collection::

Thank you. It's a small collection of rings, thankfully, but this isn't the first time I've been plagarized.

It's a pretty pathetic attempt, isn't it? No rewriting, no attempt at concealment, just cut-n-paste... and badly at that. ::eyeroll::

And you're probably right about stealing the other fics. Unfortunately, banning someone as stupid and shameless as this doesn't achieve all that much. She's probably come scuttling back (a la cockroach) under a different alias and start plagarizing again. ::sigh::

Conflicts of Interest is basically what made me start writing fanfics. To see it ripped off in such a fashion really pisses me off. I swore to them and I promise you that if official action doesn't have that jackassery removed, my army of reviewers will shame them into it. They did it when someone ripped off my story, PYLO. I don't doubt that you have a loyal and legion fanbase as well, but I'm just about to post a chapter and I figure having 200+ people see the author's note at the end of it will probably raise some hackles.

::pat pat pat:: Thanks so much for the support! ::huggle::

You know, I'm actually not that angry up about this particular incident, simply because of the sheer incontrovertible blatantness of it. Hel-lo, post a mangled cut-n-paste copy of a fairly known fic -- one with an obvious time-stamp, at that!

Seriously, I'd have been much more worked up and more profoundly angry if she'd been more sneaky about her plagarism. But in this case, I'm more annoyed than mad -- not so much at the plagarism (aggravating as that is), but at the complete utter incompetence and laziness of the theft. She not only stole my work but barely put any effort into it as well. ::snort::

I've reported the plagarized version as abuse. We'll see what happens.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 11th, 2008 10:41 pm (UTC) (Link)

BTW, I couldn't find a convenient button or link to report abuse... or did I just miss it? Anyway, I ended up having to email the FF.net support. ::mutter::

Yes, we'll see how long it takes for FF.net to do something (if anything).

It's been a while since I've posted anything on FF.net because I got so fed up with their damn uploading system and the way it keeps screwing up my fics.
kikotei From: kikotei Date: July 11th, 2008 10:45 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ack. Poor Hydra! We can totally rip this 'person' apart during Otakon. It'll be fun ^_^
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 11th, 2008 11:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
God, I just read her 'bio'. ::massive snorfle::

If she put half the effort and imagination into her own writing as she did into writing that 'bio', she -might- end up with something vaguely worth reading... or maybe not. ::evil grin::

BTW, confirmed the hotel reservations. ::thumbs up::

Fortunately, one doesn't have to be registered to report someone. *wrings hands with glee*

The part where I'm afraid I just started laughing was when I went to her profile page and saw that she's listed as a beta reader. Yes! I would /totally/ trust this person to look over my story!
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 11th, 2008 11:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
She's obviously not incapable of writing fiction -- I mean, look that that profile! ::bitchy snigger::

I noticed in the reviews for her other 'fics' that people frequently complained about the length of the story (i.e., not broken up into chapters).

I'm willing to bet that a lot of 'her' fics -- probably stolen all of them -- were originally multi-chapter and she just copied all the chapters for a given story in one big lump whenever possible, because she's just that fickin' lazy.
gwendolynflight From: gwendolynflight Date: July 11th, 2008 11:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
... that's just silly. Everyone's read Conflicts of Interest. Yeesh, choose something obscure to plagiarize. o.0
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 11th, 2008 11:45 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, it's pretty obvious that this individual definitely lacks competence in plagarism. ::sneer::
silentorphan From: silentorphan Date: July 11th, 2008 11:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
Immortalizing it in a PDF copy? You're cruel. Not to say it's undeserved, though. (Maybe you should immortalize the author bio in the same way?)

Immortalizing it in a PDF copy? You're cruel.

Well, we wouldn't want the evidence to vanish without a trace, eh?

(Maybe you should immortalize the author bio in the same way?)

Already done. ::evil grin::

I am so mortally offended... the nerve of some snot-nosed impostor trying to claim "Conflicts of Interest" as their own... >.< But it's just... she did it so incompetently (didn't even change the title??) that I wonder if she realizes she's plagiarizing? Because seriously, what can you possibly hope to gain by stealing one of the most famous FFVII fanfics in existence? As the reaction here and on ff.net shows (yep, I reported her, too), you can't steal this baby--everyone knows what it is and who it belongs to. I'm guessing she must just be a dumb, sheer newbie. @_@;;

In any case, with all this reaction, I'm sure ff.net will kick her off soon enough. Isn't it nice to know that your fans love you enough to take offense and kick plagiarizers in the butt like that? :D

P.S. I was randomly reading "Diving Justice" on your site again today (yeah, random--it's been years!) and was enjoying it a lot more this time around. Poor Sichore~ I do wish that muse had made you write a few more chapters before you put it on hold. I'm so curious about whether Tashiro ends up becoming another love interest for Errin/Si-chan... ^^
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks so much for the support!

Given some of the behavior I've seen in teenagers today -- gack, I feel so old! -- it's quite possible that this person doesn't 'get' the concept of plagiarism, either from ignorance or from sheer egotism. ::sigh::

I ended up re-reading "Divine Justice" after reading your comment. I have a stash of plotnotes for it lying around, but it just a matter of finding the energy and the time and the right obsessive mood. ::guilty twitch:: Regarding Tashiro, being a fairly ordinary guy, he'd be REALLY out of his depth if he gets involved with Errin/Sichore. Considering the ruthless and possessive nature of Alecto and Sichore's relatives, if Tashiro gets too curious, he might end up as a wet smear on the road... IF he's extremely lucky.

Added my $.02 - I mean report - to the FF.net inbox.

madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! The fic's been deleted, but the plagiarist remains. -_-
hikkira From: hikkira Date: July 12th, 2008 03:54 am (UTC) (Link)
Wow...this woman doesn't have a life nor a reason to even copy from a anybody...let alone a person who worked hard to write that story. Why do people take short cuts like that when they know its only going to get them into trouble.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
I don't know whether this person's ignorant, arrogant, or both. All I know from what I've seen of her behavior is that she's incompetent and lazy.

It makes me wonder what sort of mess her work or schoolwork looks like. ::contemptuous sniff::
stephyski From: stephyski Date: July 12th, 2008 09:16 am (UTC) (Link)
Wow. I wandered over here from FF.net, and just wanted to say what has already been said: this person, this, er... "6'4 red-eyed red-haired bodybuilder hooker" (seriously, wha?) ...they suck. And your writing is amazing.

I did my little report-o'-violations also, as they've copied quite a few good works on there. Hopefully this no-good plagarist will get booted soon.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:16 pm (UTC) (Link)
That person's 'author' profile is definitely an eyeroller.

As a reviewer of another story (probably also stolen) commented, she claims to hate Cloud/Aerith, but the posted story is all Cloud/Aerith! :P
shizuyue From: shizuyue Date: July 12th, 2008 10:29 am (UTC) (Link)
I reported that shameless person. :D I would report twice, but I figure I'll wait for one day and if no action is taken, hehe.

Incompetent plagiarists are kinda stupid, can't even do it properly. I got one once, and I was more amused than mad at first because he/she posted the first paragraph again at the end... -_-;
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:18 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! The offending fic has been deleted, but the plagiarist hasn't been banned. Too much to hope for, I suppose. ::shrug::

I'm more annoyed (in a gum-stuck-to-your-favorite-shoe sort of way) than really angry. This jerk isn't worth the energy.
From: caroltrue Date: July 12th, 2008 11:53 am (UTC) (Link)
You know what's really offensive? They didn't even put you down as a favourite author! I mean, they obviously drew so much inspiration from your work. Ha!
I can't believe they thought they could get away with it though. I mean, it's Conflicts of Interest!
Gfjhagshllja;sk!!! *incoherent rage*
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 13th, 2008 06:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
::huggle:: Thanks, but there's no need to waste energy on such a loser.

Seriously, human idiocy knows no bounds. That's why there are things like The Darwin Awards. ^_-

Just letting you know, her profile is now completely gone with no record of her on FF.net. It says she is no longer a member of the community.
