This is my second or third read through of this story and I just had to comment. I love the thought and depth that you've put into this whole thing - it comes through very well.

I really enjoy reading about Tifa's reaction to Zack's reapperance as well as Cloud's interaction with the both. I think having Cait/Reeve as the third (basically an objective third party) is wonderful because it allows for some distance when things like telling Cloud about the bite and expecting him to allow *extensive* medical tests. I really enjoy your characterization of Tifa and her inability to *see* the depth of Cloud's issues. Although, to me, it seems common sense that someone who spent 5 years at Hojo's "tender mercies" would never willngly submit to doctor's/scientist's care. Also, her reaction to the way Zack and Cloud's interaction also seems a bit...dunno what word to use really...but really, until Midgar (after his escape), she didn't really *know* Cloud. How could she assume what is *normal* for those two? Especially since she never *really* knew Cloud as a child (assuming your using canon for pre-game Cloud and Tifa relationship) and she definately didn't know him during his time with Shinra. Ack...rambling...sorry.

As an aside, I really enjoyed reading the comments between Jessara40k and yourself.

Anyway, can't wait to read more.

P.S. Hope you don't mind that I friended you since I enjoy your other writing as well :).

Thanks!

Yeah, in such an emotionally charged situation, it really helps to have a relatively objective 3rd person around to give the reader a little perspective. I think it also helps to show Tifa's flaws/insecurities in a more balanced way, without making her sound like a totally unreasonable bitch without explanation.

I really enjoy your characterization of Tifa and her inability to *see* the depth of Cloud's issues.

::sigh:: With normal people, Tifa can interact with them just fine. With them, I can see her being pretty perceptive, actually. But when her own feelings are on the line, especially in a romantic sense, Tifa becomes a bit tunnel-visioned, bordering on insensitive.

Although, to me, it seems common sense that someone who spent 5 yeart Hojo's "tender mercies" would never willngly submit to doctor's/scientist's care.

Tifa does get the idea that Cloud would hate dealing with doctors. What she doesn't understand is the depth of Cloud's emotional scarring and damage. Tifa thinks that it's just a matter of willpower -- that Cloud can cooperate with the doctors if he puts his mind to it.

What she very much fails to understand is that willpower and desire has nothing to do with it. With the understandable severity of his PTSD, Cloud probably can't cooperate even if he wants to -- the memory associations and trauma are too severe, too engrained in his psyche.

Also, her reaction to the way Zack and Cloud's interaction also seems a bit...dunno what word to use really...but really, until Midgar (after his escape), she didn't really *know* Cloud. How could she assume what is *normal* for those two? No, you're quite correct. Tifa intellectually knows that she really doesn't know Cloud that well, but she tends to forget it when faced with an emotional rival, especially someone with such an overwhelming advantage as Zack (both from personality, love, and the horrors they endured together). The bond between Zack and Cloud is so obvious at this point, she feels driven to stake some sort of emotional claim herself.

I think Tifa has the subconscious expectation of being the 'winner' when it comes to male interest (again, an effect of her childhood). She expects to be chased and pursued. She expects to be the one to pick and choose.

So Tifa is understandably emotionally insecure when she's forced into the position of the pursuer. She's the one who's forced to do the wooing, to make the advances. That insecurity makes her tentative because she wants Cloud to love her, but at the same time, she doesn't want her feelings hurt. So instead of approaching Cloud in a direct, open manner, she... waffles.

No surprise that she doesn't make any real progress with Cloud. Which didn't bother her that much, because even though Cloud doesn't seem to reciprocate any romantic feeling toward her, he didn't show romantic interest in anyone else, either.

Then Zack pops up, and Tifa feels woefully inadequate as woman. For one thing, Zack's a guy. Another thing, she sees for the first time glimpses of Cloud's real personality and how warmly he can act toward someone he REALLY cares about.

Basically, Tifa is jealous as hell and lying to herself about it.

As an aside, I really enjoyed reading the comments between Jessara40k and yourself.

I like nothing more than long comments. They're really helpful in world-building and fleshing out both plot and characters.

P.S. Hope you don't mind that I friended you since I enjoy your other writing as well :).

No problem! ^_^
