Tifa *is* coming across as being somewhat over-protective and clingy around Cloud at present. I'm not too sure whether it's a combination of her having a few issues of her own (after all, canonically, she did lose her entire family to Sephiroth's destructive redecoration of Nibelheim; she's also had the whole "saving the world" thing happen, as well as then trying to pull the pieces back together afterwards in the creation of Edge; then two years later Kadaj and co come along, she discovers Cloud has geostigma, and then all hell breaks loose *again*) and the circumstance of her having been one of the ones the others relied on to hold *them* together. This whole situation with Zack hits on a number of her own anxieties, and a couple of her own rather selfish wants. You also mention that she's effectively still convalescing after the (very serious) illness which is triggering the transformation as well, which means she's not as healthy mentally or physically as she'd like to think of herself as being. So, oddly enough, she's behaving in character - unusual reactions to unusual circumstances.

It would be interesting to know whether you've anything planned for Rude in the transformation line. If not, she may well turn to him (he's known to have a crush on her from FFVII original game canon) for emotional support once the situation with regard to Cloud becomes clear.

I do like Cid showing one of the traditional aspects of the dragon there (namely, great wisdom) in such a subtle manner. Hints of what he will become mingled in with what he already does (being a father figure to Cloud, in many ways) and what he already is (older and wiser). It's a nice transformation.

I wonder, would you be interested in a bit of scribble I did about some possible after-effects of mako enhancement/Jenova treatment for the SOLDIER types? It's mostly phrased in terms of psychological after-effects, and relies on a bit of personal fanon (namely that treatment with the Jenova/mako matrix predisposes people to become gloomy, moody bastards), but I've also been considering things like how the whole thing would affect the SOLDIERs physically (and how that would make a difference mentally). I suppose the most immediate thing is that the enhanced senses would result in an elevated ability to detect subverbal and subconscious "cues" for aggressive or negative behaviour, so they'd be more able to detect a threat. This, in turn, would mean they'd be more likely to be on the defensive, ready for action, so they'd effectively be receiving a non-stop adrenalin rush. This, in turn, makes them more aggressive, and more prone to react with violence. Finally, because the non-stop adrenalin rush is one of the things which contributes to stress-related illness, they're very easily pushed to the point of psychological fragility. End result: if they don't spend time *away* from normal humans, in most cases, they wind up very ill from a combination of sensory overstimulation, or from constant nervous tension.

Yes, Tifa has some distinct personal issues (as I discuss at great length in my responses above to Jessara40K's comments). ^_-

You also mention that she's effectively still convalescing after the (very serious) illness which is triggering the transformation as well, which means she's not as healthy mentally or physically as she'd like to think of herself as being.

Actually, this is incorrect. Tifa merely had a bad case of the stomach flu (like most people who didn't transform) but at this point, she is completely and fully recovered.

So, oddly enough, she's behaving in character - unusual reactions to unusual circumstances.

Well, given the issues Feral-verse Tifa has, I hope that her behavior makes sense.

Actually, at this point, I haven't quite decided whether to leave Rude as human or have him go feral. Someone suggested that a python would make a good alter-form for him. ::chuckle::

But regardless about whether he transforms or not, Rude's primary allegience is is to Rufus (who is a high-level feral) and the Turks (many of whom are probably going to go feral as well), especially Reno. Tifa's growing antipathy with ferals will probably work against any developing any relationship with Rude.

As for emotional support, I see Tifa turning to Barret (if only platonically). Reeve, Yuffie, and Nanaki will also be human (at least for several years), but those three have a much more moderate view of the ferals.

I do like Cid showing one of the traditional aspects of the dragon there (namely, great wisdom) in such a subtle manner. Yes, in some ways, Cid is the most mature of the group, and among the older guys in AVALANCHE, he's probably the most psychologically normal (unlike Vincent who have a lot of emotional issues) and astute (unlike Barett).

I wonder, would you be interested in a bit of scribble I did about some possible after-effects of mako enhancement/Jenova treatment for the SOLDIER types?

Sure. ^_^

It's mostly phrased in terms of psychological after-effects, and relies on a bit of personal fanon (namely that treatment with the Jenova/mako matrix predisposes people to become gloomy, moody bastards)...

So you seem to be going with almost a sort of prey-based theory (i.e., they're always on the defensive and overly sensitive to potential threats, which in a way is an aggravated prey-response). ::nod::

My personal SOLDIER theory is sort of the opposite, in that it's a predator-based theory. Jenova, being some sort of alien parasitic super-predator of sorts, causes those injected with Jenova cells to display enhanced predatory traits, including increased aggression, enhanced physical abilities and senses, etc. (i.e., the traits desirable for hunting down prey). From that, you gets tendencies to pack-type social dynamics, among other things. For example, Sephiroth is respected because he's so clearly a stronger predator, etc.

So while my SOLDIER-types also tend to be more aggressive than normal humans, it's not out of fear or the urge to protect oneself -- it's because they subconsciously tend to view others as competitors and/or prey. And if they're subject to mental issues, it's not because they're constantly on defensive or over-stressed by a prey-response, but rather the opposite -- they tend to become overwhelmed by an uncontrollable predator-response.

Well, it's natural that every fanfic writer comes up with their pet theories. ::chuckle::
