And oh, watch out for the puddles of drool on the floor. ^_^;;;
I'm talking about this new anime series (based on a series of manga and novels) called "Trinity Blood".
Plotwise, Trinity Blood isn't all that original. It's like a blend of:
(1) Trigun (complete with a protagonist whose goofiness hides a deadly serious kickass side, a promise to a now-dead cherished person not to kill, the uber-powerful psycho-sibling(?) who killed said cherished person, lost technology);
(2) Hellsing (vampires, limitations on the protagonist's powers that have to be specifically released, a strong-willed female heading a covert organization, a grim and highly militant Catholic church); and
(3) a sprinkling of Vampire Hunter D (post-apocalyptic world with quasi-feudal political structure).
But visually, TB is a hell of a lot better looking than Trigun or Hellsing -- much more on the lines of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust in its lush visual design.
And incredibly hot bishies (many of them priests!) EVERYWHERE. Many of the women (spec ops nuns! LOL) are stunningly gorgeous as well. Let's face it -- Cardinal Catherina Sforza has Sir Integra Hellsing totally trounced in the feminine looks department, and Catherina is certainly not lacking in the brains or the guts area, either.
And now for a taste of the characters in Trinity Blood.... (beware spoilers!)
Father Abel Nightroad, the main protagonist, who is much more than the bumbling human he first appears. He's a Cruznik (or Kreznik), a vampire who feeds on other vampires. In his Cruznik form, he had black wings and wields a blood scythe with a barbed whip tail. Cruznik-Abel typically operates at 40% power. However, when really provoked, he can achieve 80% power and is capable of extremely powerful electrical attacks.
Cardinal Catherina Sforza, head of AX, a covert 'special ops' branch of the Vatican who specializes in troubleshooting and eliminating threats to the Catholic Church (and therefore Abel's boss). She's the half-sister of the rather wimpy and indecisive Pope Alessandro XV III. Politically savvy and favoring more subtle or diplomatic methods, she clashes constantly with her half-brother Francesco, an extreme religious militant whose typical response to any problem is to crush it with overwhelming military force.
Father Tres Iqus (aka Gunslinger), a cyborg who often works with Abel and acts quite the cold emotionless robot. However, there are definite hints that he's got some feelings, however deeply buried. Appears totally dedicated to Catherina. His speciality is firearms (usually dual handguns). He handles his missions with ruthless, machine-like precision, even if they require killing children.
Father Hugue (aka Sword Dancer), a deadly AX operative and cyborg who uses, you guessed it, blades and swords. When seen shirtless(!) in the anime, he has scars all over his body. He's quite the rogue agent, who apparently has a profound hatred for vampires (who supposedly killed his family and abducted his sister), to the point of exceeding or disobeying Vatican orders. Known to have virtually wiped out the vampire population in Amsterdam single-handedly.
Leon Garcia - convict who works as an occasional AX operative to reduce his prison term. He throws metal rings a la Xena.
Father Vaclav Havel - AX operative who can apparently turn invisible. Also appears to be a close confident of Catherina.
Francesco di Medici, step- (or half-) brother to the current pope and Catherina. Arrogant, domineering, intolerant, and fanatical, it's no surprise that he's the head of the Inquisition.
Cain Nightroad, a mysterious individual who appears to be biologically related (siblings?) to Abel, and the shadowy leader of the enemy organization Rozen Kreuz and Contra Mundi. His Cruznik form has 6 white wings.
Isaak Fernand Von Kampfer (aka Panzer Magier)(black hair, on the left), member of Rozen Kreuz and possibly Cain's second-in-command, a powerful vampire who gives even Cruznik-Abel a hard time. His powers involve shields and a devastatingly powerful electromagnetic accelerator cannon called Belial.
Dietrich von Lohengrin (aka Marionettenspelier) (brown hair, on the right), member of Rozen Kreuz. His powers reputedly have something to do with manipulating people and/or their bodies, which explains the 'marionette' in his codename. He's apparently a close associate and protege of Isaak. The two of them are often slashed together and it's not hard to see why. ^_-
