Now, why am I not surprised?
After my Final Fantasy VII fic "Conflicts of Interest" got plagiarized by cloti lovers anonymous, I became curious about the other stories this person claimed as their own.

And after a bit of Googling, what do you think I find?

::dramatic drumroll::

Every damn one of her stories has been plagarized!

For the stories that don't have actual time stamps (or an actual publishing date!), I used the WayBack Machine to get a general idea when the story page was last archived.

Ye gods, talk about brazen!!

The last story "Tune in Anytime" was the hardest to track down because our busy little plagiarist actually went through the trouble of substituting "Tifa" for the name "Sophie" in the story. And yes, "Tune in Anytime" is a commercially published book, available in your local library, bookstore, or on Amazon! O_o

Dear gods, that person is beyond hope. I really hope she gets her ass banned. My sympathies to anyone who got plagiarized. This is disgusting. D:

Unfortunately, this sort of wholesale plagiarizing is (to me) an indicator of some serious issues with this person -- call it denial, stupidity, selfishess, whatever. Call me cynical, but I don't think a mere banning will teach her anything. It might only induce her to be more careful about her thefts. ::sigh::

Well that really takes the cake, I went to my journal and Red Leather Love to let people know all those fics were stolen and to see if one of them was theirs (rolls eyes)

Well, if people weren't stupid, they'd never get caught.

True, true. A perfect crime is one that no one knows exists. ^_-

First I love your story and am sorry someone worthless tried to steal it. I wonder on the published story if it is possible to let the author know or the publishing house and they can report it. FF.net has still not take action as of yet, which I think is surprising!
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 14th, 2008 11:09 am (UTC) (Link)
With respect to COI, FF.net only removed the offending fic.

As of this comment, another three stories have been deleted, although I don't know whether by FF.net the offender (in response to accusing reviews). ::shrug::
jlsigman From: jlsigman Date: July 13th, 2008 11:38 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, I've gone through and reported all of them... we'll see what happens...
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 14th, 2008 11:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Three more fics have deleted, so that's something.

However, I've saved all of them in PDF form. ::evil grin::

Here's the addy for anyone else:

Thanks for the info! I thought about trying to find out where/how to report the last one, but got a bit lazy yesterday. ^_^;;;

If you want to let the publisher know, you may need to do it quickly. The fics have been disappearing from FF.net as people report them.

After my earlier experience with being plagiarized, I learned to save copies of the offending works for documentation, so I do have PDF copies of all her ::cough:: 'stories'.

Fax has been sent!

People like her suck. And the people who tell original authors that their works are plagiarized from someone else's ideas. That happened to an AWESOME InuYasha authoress.

Glad you got this one taken care of.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: July 14th, 2008 11:30 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, it's been often said that there are only 20-30 basic plots in fiction. So at this point, pretty much everything is derived or inspired by someone else's work. So I'm a bit skeptical when people claim to come up with a </i>completely</i> original plot, especially when one works (and reads) in a specific fandom.

My basic approach has always been to do my best to credit my inspirations and/or acknowledge the existence of unintentional similarities. It happened to me with a line from one of Lady Koneko's fics -- the two stories were in different fandom, but the virtually identical sentence appeared in both of them. ^_^;

Have you used the 'Report Abuse' function? The mods won't even bother to look until you bring it to their attention. This little bitch needs to be stopped.
chorus_of_chaos From: chorus_of_chaos Date: July 27th, 2008 11:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
wow...she must have big ice cold brass....yeah. Maybe you should contact the publisher of tune in anytime and point them to that page!

Um...I realize this is probably a long pathetic shot in the dark, as looking through briefly at your journal it looks like your among the many who've been consumed by the FFwhatsis fever...but through a round about I dunno how jump shot of links I found your page and the saiyuki fic there...it looked like it was not finished, any chance you did wrap that up and didn't update the page, or are going to revisit it, or has it just stalled and died? Just curious.
From: caroltrue Date: July 29th, 2008 06:25 pm (UTC) (Link)

It continues...

Huh. After visiting her profile again it looks like cloti lovers anonymous is still uploading, and reuploading.
'Flowers Grow' is up again, as is 'Blood and Whiskey'. The "new" ones (only new in so far as they weren't on her profile before the 21st), 'Tseng's Prophecy,''Angel Of Mine', 'Bitter Ash', 'The Glories Of The Son' and 'The Sins Of The Father' were all taken from http://www.rpgclassics.com/fanfics/ffvii.shtml
I've reported them all, but it doesn't seem like being caught out has phased her at all. She's a rotten one >>
armina_skitty From: armina_skitty Date: August 4th, 2008 05:42 am (UTC) (Link)
Just checked and said individual is no longer on FF.net-- in her current incarnation. Just thought I'd let you know in case you were interested.
madamhydra From: madamhydra Date: August 4th, 2008 10:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hurrah! It took long enough. I wrote FF.net a long email about all her fics, with comparison links and dates. Not to mention reporting each individual fic as well. ::grumble::
armina_skitty From: armina_skitty Date: August 5th, 2008 05:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hmm, maybe it happened earlier, but no one thought to check? Glad I could give you the good news though (or does the this whole fiasco have any good news...)
I look forward to your next installment of whichever fic of your holds your interest. ^_~

You think with the amount of effort they went through to plagiarize all those fics, they'd write one of their own. That's kind of one of those "Uh...duh" or "....What? Why??!!!" exclamations.

Thank you

Hello,

First of all, let me say you have my sincere gratitude for your efforts on behalf of writers everywhere. Several of the fan fiction stories I've written were under the list of plagiarized material. While it has been several years since i've either updated or posted any new material, there is something refreshing about knowing the things I have written still exists on the net. However, when credit is stolen or tarnished by others, it is disparaging, as I am sure you are aware. Unfortunately, we live in an environment where wholesale theft covets the economy, the nation, society, everything; or almost everything. Certainly this does not grant liberty to individuals to steal at their heart's content. But the climate we live in is ripe for this type of shallow behavior.

That being said, I am very grateful you took the time to let me know about these disturbing revelations. On one hand it is offensive to know someone was trying to gain notoriety from the works I put out. But on the same token, it is encouraging to know that material I have written several years ago was enjoyed to the point that someone else would try to take credit for it. Well, this entire event has encouraged me to renew my creativity and write more. So while the nature of these circumstances are very bad, the end result I will take from it is motivation.

I have read your story "Conflicts of Interest" and it was very galvanizing; it was one of the first fan fiction stories I had read and I most certainly enjoyed your focus on Zack Fair. Writers like you are an encouragement and you have a very unique gift. Don't let the theft of this plagiarists ruin that spark; instead, let it drive you to reach new heights. You should nurture that gift to a higher scale. I for one would be more than happy to one day walk into a book store and read a book published by you.

Never give up on you dreams. :) Thank you for everything.

Re: Thank you

Many thanks for your kind comments on "Conflicts of Interest"! Yes, being plagarized can sometimes be viewed as a backhanded compliment, in an "ooooh, nice and shiny... so I'll steal it!" type of way. But still... ::eyeroll::

I'm very glad this incident has nudged you back into writing. I'm really looking to more works from you!

I haven't been writing recently. It's not from the plagarism, but rather from too many interesting distractions. I'm sure you know how easy it is for writing time to get eaten by other interesting things. ::guilty twitch::

Hmmmm... your comment is now giving ME the serious itch to start up writing again. ^_^

Hello~ :D I'm sorry about the news of plagiarism. I know it is painful to have one's work copied.

Erm, I'm really sorry if this is severely OT, but I would just like to ask if you have any plans of continuing some of your old stories for other fandoms, like your old Saiyuki and Gundam Wing stories, or are they to stay unfinished, like it's in hiatus or, er, abandoned (I hope not)? :) It's just that I love your fics a lot and have been visiting your main site on-and-off since years before, around 4-5 years now. Haha... ^^;

I'm sorry for the OT reply, again. Hope to hear from you~ :)

I hope that idiot hasn't somehow gotten you to stop writing. I really enjoy your fics, all of them, and it would be sad if something some idiot did would stop you from writing.
